June 2024 brought the first big rains of the season to Firefly Forest School – and our children welcomed every drop. It was a month of muddy, joyful play, of looking back on our butterfly camp, of opening a brand-new playgroup class for our very youngest, and of heading underground in search of hidden treasure, all part of nature-based learning in and beyond our Bangkok forest garden.

Laughter in the rain

The month opened with a little poem from our teachers about children laughing in the rain. Their faces were bright and carefree as raindrops danced on their skin; they jumped and jumped, and their laughter echoed through the forest, as if the rain were a canvas for play on which to paint the world their own way. Clothes soaked, hair tangled, hearts full of happiness. Rain, the poem says, is a gift from the sky and a chance for the joy of childhood – so let them get messy, let them play in the rain’s embrace. In their laughter we find calm, and a reminder of how simple and peaceful life can be.

Everyday discoveries continued too: our short clip “Into the forest, children find…” captures the curiosity that comes alive whenever little explorers head out among the trees.

Looking back: dancing with butterflies

We also shared memories from our butterfly camp, Lost in Wonderland Season 2. In nature’s embrace, children ran and played as butterflies fluttered around them; small hands reached for delicate wings, and laughter and smiles rang through the forest. The butterflies danced like a living, many-coloured painting, leading the children on a new adventure through fields of wildflowers and trees, where they chased, explored and learned the lessons the forest has to offer. The journey from little caterpillar to bright, winged creature is a beautiful symbol of change and hope – and a reminder of why we let children roam and play in nature, by day and by night.

Our youngest playgroup class begins

June’s playgroup round was extra special: our little Toddler class started for the very first time. We shared a glimpse of what our playgroup looks like and introduced our youngest playgroup class, the Wonderers, for our tiniest explorers and their families.

Into the Woods Camp no. 24: Under the Ground

At the end of the month, on 24–25 June, our adventurers went underground for Into the Woods Camp no. 24, “Under the Ground Camp Season 2”, a two-day, one-night trip to the Bo Ploi Lek Phet gem ponds and Maldives Beach Resort in Chanthaburi. The camp invited children to discover the wonders of the world beneath our feet – searching for sparkling gems, exploring tunnels in a gem mine and venturing into caves in search of precious treasure, while learning about local geology, minerals and ecosystems from our experienced team. Shadow play, a campfire and storytelling rounded off the adventure, all designed to spark curiosity and a lasting love of science and nature.

We also passed on a lovely opportunity for older children from OurLand – A Nature Conservation Effort in Kanchanaburi, and look forward to joining activities like these together as our own students grow up.

In the news / thank you

A big thank you to The Potential for visiting our home, and to Khun Pupae and the photographer for spending such meaningful time with us. Firefly Forest School grows thanks to the support of everyone around us, and we remain committed to developing this kind of education for our children and our society. As we shared at the time, our primary classroom and a play room for our tiniest learners were about to open – if this approach to learning speaks to your heart, please come and say hello.
